What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the “lifeblood” of the plant and have been used forever. True therapeutic, medicinal grade essential oils can be used to support our bodies in so many ways.

An essential oil comes from a plant, it comes from an herb, it comes from the bark of a tree or flower or stem. It comes from the earth. It’s referred to as a plants immune system. It helps the plant stay alive and healthy.

The blood in your body is kind of like what an essential oil is to a plant. The essential oil of the plant can help the body heal. Many people are familiar with using herbs to enhance wellness. When plants are dried for tea or to make supplements, 95-97% of their essential oil is lost. By using essential oils, we are getting the complete chemical profile in every drop! Essential oils are plant concentrates and are very very powerful and potent.

Just one drop contains 40 million trillion molecules that can affect the body at the cellular level. That deep! Not only does the essential oil help the plant survive and thrive but it also works perfectly in conjunction with our body and supports our body in living its best life too.

For more than two decades, we've diligently overseen every step of this process, both on our own global farms and with our carefully vetted partner farms. No other essential oil company on the planet can lay claim to having the same high-quality process.

SEED

Powerful, effective essential oils come from seeds and plants that are verified for their essential oil potential by Young Living experts, partnering with university experts.

CULTIVATE

Young Living farms, located around the globe, are dedicated to perfecting the best growing and harvesting methods. Our experts travel the world visiting our co-op farms to verify that their growing and cultivating processes match our high standards. These operations provide an ongoing source for essential oils that meet Young Living’s demanding quality standards.

DISTILL

Combining ancient and modern techniques, Young Living owns it's own distilleries and is recognized as an innovator in essential oil distillation. To guarantee consistent quality, our oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities, to ensure that they meet stringent specifications, exceed international standards, and contain the optimal levels of natural bioactive compounds.

How to Use

There are 3 recognized uses for essential oils: aromatic, dietary & topical

AROMATIC

The first way to use essential oils is aromatically, breathing them in through your nose. Essential oils can purify the air naturally as well as have a positive impact on our mood and overall well-being when used aromatically. Stimulation of the brain via olfactory senses, can cause changes within parts of the brain! They can also benefit your respiratory and immune systems.

DIETARY

Perfect for adding flavor to your favorite food and drinks, the Plus+ line gives you the freedom to explore some of our best loved essential oils in a variety of nutritious and delicious ways.

TOPICALLY

The third way to use essential oils is to apply them topically, directly on your skin, usually at the site of concern.

Essential oils can be used either neat (undiluted) or diluted. We recommend diluting when first getting started. Dilution can also be used to spread essential oils over a larger surface, like massage. Always dilute on small children and babies or with "hot" oils such as oregano or cinnamon.

Essential oils have a small molecular structure and are quickly absorbed, so when applied topically, they can clean the receptor sites on the cell membrane and help transport oxygen into the cells. In an oxygen-rich environment, our cells can now flourish.

Visit Pubmed.gov and type in any essential oil and you'll be surprised at what information is available on the usage of essential oils.

What Are Carrier Oils?

A carrier oil is a vegetable oil that can be used to dilute essential oils

While many can be used ‘neat' (undiluted), diluting helps spread the essential oil over a larger part of the skin. Carrier oils are pressed from the fatty parts of the plant. They do not evaporate quickly and do not have a strong aroma. Always keep a carrier oil close by in case you accidentally rub your eyes.

A Few Things to Remember...

Each essential oil bottle comes with label directions, so please read before using. Most essential oils are safe for general use but there are a few things you need to remember:

  • Careful when applying essential oils near sensitive areas like eyes and ears.

  • Never try to rinse with water if you experience skin irritation,  as this will only make it worse. If you experience skin irritation or get an EO in your eyes, flush and dilute the area with a safe carrier oil to alleviate the discomfort.

  • Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after applying citrus oils or blends containing citrus, directly on your skin to avoid sunburn.

  • If unsure, dilute with a carrier oil.

The Limbic System

The Power of Smell

The limbic system controls memory, stress levels, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and hormone balance (Higley & Higley, 1998).

This relationship explains why essential oils have very profound physiological and psychological effects.

When you inhale, breath in, or diffuse essential oils they go directly into your lungs. They are quickly absorbed into the blood stream as they cross the airway/capillary system.

From there the molecules of essential oils are transported throughout the body and into each and every cell. Since it only takes a few minutes for blood to circulate, the essential oils you inhaled will touch every cell of your body within 20 minutes.

We want you to remember this—just APPLY them. Start with one drop and work from there. Apply them wherever you want. On your wrists, on your forehead, back of neck, over your heart, over your liver, on the bottom of your feet.

No spot is a bad spot and they will go where they are needed.

How essential oils effect the Limbic System

Most Common Application Points…

Reflexologists  will point out that the bottom of your foot has approximately 7,000 nerve endings that link to different organs within your body. How cool is that?

  • Along hairline of forehead

  • Temples

  • Behind the ears or on earlobes

  • Back of neck

  • Upper and lower back, and along spinal column

  • Over abdomen and other vital organs

  • Top of feet and vitaflex points on the soles of feet
